Install ESX on ESX

  1. Install ESX 4 on a physical server
  2. Set-up internal/lab network
    1. Create a new vSwitch
    2. Set to Promiscuous Mode (vSwitch Properties | Security | Promiscuous Mode -> Accept)
  3. Create virtual ESX, should a custom VM with following parameters
    • Disk (20 GB is fine)
    • VM hardware version 7
    • Guest OS: Linux | Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (64 bit)
    • 2x CPU, 2GB RAM (or more)
    • 2x e1000 NICs
    • LSI Logic Parallel SCSI controller
  4. Install ESX onto the VM
  5. Allow VM's to run on virtual ESX
    1. With ESX shutdown, edit settings of the ESX VM
    2. Options tab, then Advanced | General | Configuration Parameters
    3. Select Add Row
    4. monitor_control.restrict_backdoor | TRUE
