An ESX server is a VMware Virtual Machine hosting server. Historically it had two components, the VM Kernel which provides the hardware virtualisation, and the Service Console, which is used to manage and report on the operation of the VM Kernel. The Service Console has been phased out (with the introduction of ESXi variants of ESX), and since vSphere 5 has been completely removed.
